This summit cairn marks the top of Skylight mountiain - 4th highest peak in New York state at 4926ft. The cairn has been built over the years by hikers depositing a rock with each visit. Local legend has been established that by carrying a rock up and placing it on the cairn, it will ensure good weather for the rest of your trip. Whether you bring a rock from home or just from the nearby col at "Four Corners" is unclear but the pile of rocks stands as a testament to hikers buying into the legend and their hopes for good weather. Rocks vary in size from small pebbles to basketball sized. A long hike from any direction means that enjoying the summit is paired with the knowledge that the trip is far from over with miles to go before you are back to a trailhead.
