West Ham Parish Boundary Stone situated on High Road Leytonstone.
The dates on the stone show the years in which the boundary was confirmed.
It was nubered 31 in 1864 but no longer marks any boundary.
Parish boundary markers were beaten in an annual ceremony called The Beating Of The Bounds.
Beating the bounds is an ancient custom still observed in some English and Welsh parishes.
A group of old and young members of the community would walk the boundaries of the parish, usually led by the parish priest and church officials, to share the knowledge of where they lay, and to pray for protection and blessings for the lands.
Parish boundaries were significant because welfare payments, burials and medical treatment for poor people used to be provided by the parish in which they were born.
