Major John Richardson, Canada's first novelist, was ranked among the best writers of the nineteenth century. His Wacousta, which told of the siege of Fort Detroit by Pontiac in 1763, went through many editions and was widely read in Great Britain and North America from its publication in 1832 well into the 20th century.
