While the Hertz Trail has many limitations in terms of being just an out-and-back route and relatively short at 3.1 miles, it more than makes up for it in scenery. Running right beside Lake Whatcom in some very rugged terrain it is a great route.

Having been constructed in the 1890s by the Bellingham Bay & Eastern Railroad, it was bought out by the Northern Pacific and connected Bellingham to Seattle through Sedro-Woolley, Arlington, and Snohomish.
