In the afternoon of July 10, 1863 General Morgan's troops looted Canton stores and took fresh horses as they continued east to New Philadelphia, crossing the middle fork of the Blue River on their way into Scott County. Eight miles south of here, near Pekin, a small detachment of confederates trying to rejoin Morgan's Raiders were defeated on July 11th.
