This building was built in 1879 as a new court in Barnsley, located in St. Marys place on the corner of Westgate, with new cells behind the Superintendants house. Court was used until a new court was built in 1970 on Church Fields and this one is still in use.
At the time of construction of the old court barnsley came under the Yorkshire West Riding district. This accounts for the initials WYR on the date stone.
In 1974 Barnsley became a Metropilitand Borough.
