John Wesley McCormick was a Revolutionary War veteran who was one of the earliest setters in central Indiana. He built a cabin at this site along the White River. Here in June, 1820 the commissioners appointed by state met and decided to move the state capital to this new town of Indianapolis. The site is now marked by a large boulder with a plaque inscribed:
Here stood the cabin of
John McCormick
one of the first settlers
in central Indiana.
The commissioners appointed
by the legislature to select
a site for the permanent seat
of government of
the state of Indiana

on the seventh of June 1820
and decided upon the location
for the town afterwards named
Indianapolis
