Staircase locks are used where a canal needs to climb a steep hill, and consist of groups of locks which open directly into each other. Foxton Locks are the largest flight of such staircase locks on the English canal system with a total rise of 75 feet and were built to provide a canal link between the North and South of England.

The locks are a popular tourist attraction and there is a museum, pub, and gift shop as well as excellent parking facilities close by.
