At each of the eight angles of the octagonal Place de la Concorde are small buildings which have a sculpted representation of a major French city above it. This one, represents the city of Strasbourg. It depicts a young woman seated and wearing a long gown and a crown that is designed to resemble a fort. She appears to hold a sword (only the tip can be seen in the photo) in her left hand on her lap and her right arm is bent with her hand on her waist in a defiant pose. She looks to her right with a stern face. Her feet rests on a cannon.
Wikipedia (
visit link) informs us that the artist is James Pradier who also did the sculpture for the city of Lille. and that "After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, when Alsace-Lorraine was lost to Germany, the Strasbourg statue was covered in black mourning crepe on state occasions,[1] and was often decorated with wreaths; this practice did not end until France regained the region following World War I."
