Marker Text:
Ste. Thérèse Chapel Cardinal Ste. Thérèse Chapel stands as a reminder of the dedication and commitment of the early residents of Cardinal to their community. Built in the style of Romanesque Architecture with Gothic detailing, the Chapel reflects the hopes and dreams, as well at the disappointments of the people who worshipped here. In 1926 a group of cardinal residents, known as La Societe St. Louis was organized to build a church. the original directors of La Societe St. Louis were Cyprien, J.B. Chateau, Joseph Schaumacher, Theophile Toutant and Lucien Vigier. Construction began in 1927 under the direction of Alexandre Beaudry and Joseph Schumacher. The completion Ste. Thérèse Chapel in 1929 was only the first of many hurdles that the residents of Cardinal had to overcome. Residents endured much criticism over the chapel which remained unblessed and without a priest until 1935 when Archbishop Yelle sent official word that Father Champagne could celebrate mass at Ste. Thérèse during the winter months. On November 17, 1935, the first mass, attended by over 250 people, was said in Cardinal's Church. Only three religious ceremonies other than mass were ever held in the chapel: two baptisms, Elise Fouasse on December 16, 1945 and Robert Pittet on February 27, 1949; and the marriage of Therese Cenerini and Andre Talbot on October 21, 1950. Masses were held until 1960 when Archbishop Beaudoux closed the chapel. The Chapel was declared a municipal Heritage Site on December 28, 1989.
