Just a few short miles from Bemidji, Minnesota, the mighty Mississippi River starts it's journey across America and along its over 2500 mile trek to the Gulf of Mexico. Bemiji, the Ojibwe word for "lake crossing with water" references the river crossing into the lake.
This sign is situated just as you come into Bemidji at the Chamber of Commerce and Information Center building. Also nearby are the iconic statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox.
Bemidji is home to approximatelyu 13,000 residents, more in the summer months when all the part time residents come back to the north country. It is in Beltrami County in northwestern MN.
