Drayton Hall is the oldest surviving example of Georgian Palladian architecture in the United States and one of the few pre-Revolutionary houses that remain in close to original condition. It is the only plantation on the Ashley River to survive intact to the present day. It is a two-story brick house with an above ground basement.
Both Colonial and British forces used it as a staging ground during the Revolution. The epicenter of Charleston’s 1886 earthquake was just a few miles away. Major hurricanes have battered it throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Union forces approached with the intent of burning it but were turned away by quarantine flags posted at the road by the owners.
The side of the house with the double stairs and columned portico faces the Ashley River Road. The rear of the house, where the gardens were located, faces the Ashley River.
