This New Mexico History sign is in rather poor shape; it has been vandalized and also shows the affects of the harsh New Mexico climate.

Abo Pass Trail
This route through the southern edge of the Manzanlo Mountains links the Rio Grande Valley to the salt lakes and Salinas Pueblo missions east of the mountains.

The road began as a Pueblo trade route to the eastern plains and later connected the Spanish-period Camino Real to the region. Evolution of the route continued when the Santa Fe Railway completed its Belen Cutoff route through the pass in 1908 and with subsequent construction of a modern highway.
