Omdat Damme zo dicht bij de zee lag, was het water er ondrinkbaar. Om de inwoners toch van zoet water te kunnen voorzien, werd er water vanuit het binnenland aangevoerd. In 1269 kreeg de stad de grafelijke toestemming om water uit de vijver van het kasteel van Male, enkele kilometers verderop, op te pompen. Het transport van het water verliep via een systeem van loden buizen (pijpen) langs de Pijpeweg (vandaar de naam). Op verschillende plaatsen in de stad stonden waterpompen waar de Dammenaars hun drinkbaar water konden halen.

Because Damme was so close to the sea the water is undrinkable. For the people still in need of fresh water, water was supplied from the inland. In 1269 the city got the Count's permission to pump water from the pond of the castle of Male, a few miles away. The transport of water passed through a system of lead pipes (tubes) along the Pijpeweg (hence the name). At various places in the city where water pumps were the folk of Damme could get their drinking water.
Handle was removed 10 years ago.
