Le Verrier, a French mathemetician, was one of the discoverers of the planet Neptune in 1846...and has at least 4 extraterrestrial objects named after him!

This sculpture is located in front of the Paris Observatory where Le Verrier played a part in the discovery of the planet Neptune. The work depicts him looking young, standing and pointing to a globe held by a tiny Atlas near his left leg. He is formally dressed in a vest and long coat. The coordinates refer to the entrance to the Observatory since the gates were locked and visitors were not allowed. This also prevented the poster of this waymark from observing the signature of the sculptor- information not found on the internet either.
His name is one of only 72 which are engraved on the Eiffel Tower. He had predicted the existence of Neptune using mathematics. He was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1868 and 1876.

As for the extraterrestrial objects:
1)Le Verrier (lunar crater)

"Le Verrier is a small lunar impact crater located in the northern part of the Mare Imbrium. To the west is the slightly larger crater Helicon, and farther to the west-northwest lies the mountain-ringed bay Sinus Iridum.
Le Verrier, sometimes written Leverrier, is a bowl-shaped feature with a nearly circular rim. The inner walls display the appearance of slumping along the upper edges. The inner wall and floor to the southeast appears more irregular than elsewhere."
2) Le Verrier Martian Crater

"1997 Leverrier is a main belt asteroid. It was discovered by the Indiana Asteroid Program and was named after Urbain Le Verrier, the French mathematician who, simultaneously with John Couch Adams, predicted the existence and position of the planet Neptune."
