Anmyeondo was once a peninsula, but a canal was dug several hundred years ago, severing it from the mainland. This welcome sign is at the north end of the bridge on Route 77 which was opened in 1970, once again connecting Korea's sixth largest island to the rest of the country.
Anmyeondo is famous for its many beaches, forests, and fishing culture, and especially for its flowers. This sign actually bears two slogans. First, in the circle, is the slogan for the coastal county of Taean "Flower & Sea." Vertically, above a picture of red peppers, is the slogan, "Anmyeondo Sea Breeze Red Peppers." (안면도 갯바람고추) These hot peppers are a staple of Korean cuisine.
