Princess Ning-gon-hin—Phnom Penh, Cambodia. - Statues of Religious Figures on Waymarking.com

This statue is a representation of Princess Ning-gon-hin. Her likeness is to be seen with some frequency in Cambodia, however, the difficulty is obtaining an understanding of her history. Apparently, as far as I can gather, there are difference versions of her role in Cambodian Buddhism, present in different parts of the Kingdom. However, the central legend is as follows. The Buddha was threatened by a demon, to protect the Buddha the princess produces water from her hair. This water washes away the demon army, and the crocodile then eats the demons.

An interesting point to the story is that there is a belief that this crocodile is a 'good' crocodile, in some fashion the croc protects people. This runs counter to the entirely understandable aversion Cambodians (farmers in water a rich environment) have to crocodiles (not that many people like the creatures).


This statue is located on a traffic roundabout, on a busy intersection on National Highway 5, in central Phnom Penh, close to the Olympic Stadium. The princess is portrayed in her usual fashion, washing water out of her hair, with an obedient crocodile nearby. Reaching the princess by foot, across the road is not advised, traffic, however, the statue can be readily seen from the surrounding area.
