James Patillo Smith (buried here) platted streets in this area of northern Grayson County to establish the town of Steedman in 1880, renamed in 1909 for railroad attorney, James P. Hagerman. The town consisted of 250 residents, a cotton gin, school, church, post office, railroad depot, and several businesses by 1910. The town prospered and grew to contain three churches and a three-teacher school, although once it became known that Lake Texoma would be here, the post office closed and the population declined.
