FREEBURG, 271 m. (802 alt., 395 pop.), dominated by the imposing red-brick Church of the Holy Family, is one of the youngest of the German communities. Although listed as a post office in 1884, it was not until the building of the Rock Island Railroad In 1902 that the town assumed some importance as a shipping point. - Missouri: A Guide to the "Show Me" State, Tour 8, pg. 468.

The Holy Family Catholic Church remains the most imposing building in this community now with a population just over 400.  The church  is referred to as the "Cathedral of the Ozarks" and a magnificent building with its twin towers.  The church constructed in 1920 is in very good condition and continues to serve its active parish.
