This wonderful bronze statue is located by the parking lot at the Van Denmark Orthopedic Building. It depicts the three Van Denmark doctors casting the leg of an injured child. The Plexiglas x-ray adds a special touch. The images are life size and are wearing the medical clothing that was common in the 40's and 50's.

A plaque tells more about the history of these three noteable doctors and their contribution to the medical field:

“Drs. Van Denmark. The Van Denmark name is synonymous with orthopedic surgery in South Dakota. Dr. Guy Van Denmark (1879-1963) was the first orthopedic surgeon in South Dakota. ‘Dr. Guy’ and Irene Fisher Coon, R.N., founded the original specialized crippled children’s hospital and school program at what was then Sioux Valley Hospital during the polio epidemics of the 1930’s-50’s. Dr. Walter Van Denmark (1915-1958) was a brilliant diagnostician and surgeon who received numerous scholastic honors. Dr. Robert E. Van Denmark, Sr. (1913-1995) was a beloved orthopedic surgeon, teacher, and mentor with a distinguished career in surgery, medical education, and the advancement of orthopedic surgery in South Dakota. His son, Robert E. Van Denmark, Jr., was a founding member of the Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Department of Sanford Clinic. The Van Denmark building is named in honor of Drs. Guy, Walter, and Robert, Sr. Van Denmark (left to right) for their lasting contribution to orthopedic surgery and healthcare throughout the region.

“This sculpture celebrates the pioneering legacy of Drs. Guy, Walter, and Robert Sr. Van Denmark, and is dedicated as inspiration for ongoing excellence in orthopedic care and rehabilitation.”

The sculpture was dedicated in June of 2008.

Historical information was taken from the plaque.
