The airport first opened in 1930 and its older name was Micra Airport of Thessaloniki, but it was renamed in 1993, taking the name of the historic geographical region of Makedonia.
Today, the Makedonia airport serves local and international flights to European countries and Cyprus. It operates 24 hours as a passenger and goods station with room to accommodate 14 airplanes of all sizes. The airport connects daily with Athens through some 10-16 flights. The duration of the flight is of about 35 minutes. A flight from Athens costs (one way) about 80 euros - but if you book early, the two domestic airlines can offer tickets as low as 19 euros (without tax).
Olympic Airways, Swissport and Goldair Handling Agent carry out ground servicing. The airport also accommodates Air Force squadrons and the Flying Club of Thessaloniki, which is open 18 hours a day and has light planes available for rent.
Thessaloniki Airport connected also to Milan, Rome, Zurich, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Munich, Frankfurt, Dortmund (easyJet, starting may 31, 2007), Moscow, London, Paris, Vienna, Larnaca, Prague, Budapest, Bucharest. .There are several flights to Aegean and Ionian islands .
