The Round Lake landing is the ticket to a few days of canoeing fun in the wilderness. Located off the Gunflint Trail and entering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness at Brant Lake (entry #52) the journey includes 13 lakes and portages. The loop is about 12 miles long, and portages range from 25 rods (a rod is equal to 16.5’) to a little over a mile. Some of the terrain is steep and rocky creating some rugged areas on a predominately challenging route. There are no rivers or whitewater, but some of the larger lakes may be rough in windy conditions. The loop can be done in 3 days, but if fishing or exploring is a priority, it may be best to allow a little more time. Campsites are located on Brant, Bat, Gillis, Crooked, Tuscarora, and Missing Link Lakes. Keep your eyes open for wildlife; it is not unusual to see moose, bears, deer, fox, eagles. and loons. Be sure to take bug spray during the mosquito season, and practice Leave No Trace ethics: Take only pictures, leave only footprints.

Appropriate canoe/camping gear is required, and a BWCAW overnight permit will need to be obtained from the U.S. Forest Service. Canoes must be registered in the owner’s home state, and a Minnesota fishing license is necessary for anglers. A parking lot is available at the landing.
