The loss of life in the First World War was incredibly large and for small towns like Matlock Bath devastating. Sometimes nearly a whole generation was wiped out from these towns.

John 15:13
There are a number of inscriptions on this memorial but this quote from John 15:13 is often used on these memorials in remembrance of the sacrifice made by these men. In this case it is written on the right hand side of the memorial.
               GREATER LOVE
     HATH NO MAN THAN THIS
THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE
          FOR HIS FRIENDS
Ecclesiasticus 44:1-15
This quotation is probably the one most often seen in relation to World War I memorials in the UK and in some cases Europe. It was recommended for use on British war graves erected along the Western Front, by Rudyard Kipling an English poet and novelist. He had been deeply affected by the death of his only son in 1915 and he became a member of the Imperial War Graves Commission formed at the end of World War I.

Many towns then started to use it on their own memorials. It is a very simple quotation but very powerful.
THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE
It is inscribed near the bottom of the memorial.
