When the master plan for Taylor University's Upland campus was produced in 1981, it was determined that the campus needed a focal centerpiece to symbolize the mission and heart of the campus. The Rice Bell Tower stands as that landmark to this date. Two twin spires stand as the two pivotal pillars of the Taylor University educational experience. When lit at night, the two main lights shine the two spires into the evening sky, making the symbol visible well beyond the campus boundary.

The Rice Bell Tower, stands almost 72 feet tall, and its twin spires symbolize Taylor’s dedication to the integration of faith and learning. The bell tower was presented by Garnet I. Rice, in dedication to her late husband Raymond E. Rice. Both graduated from Taylor University in 1929.

The electronic bell system can be heard throughout the campus at the following times:

¦ 8am to 11pm: chimes each hour, ending the day with the school song
¦ 9:50am, 10:50am, and 5:00pm (weekdays): plays music, often themed around the season
¦ 4:15pm (Saturdays, fall semester): plays the school song to coincide with the end of football games

The carillon bells, given in honor of Barbara Gentile, remind the campus community of its dual mission throughout the day. Dr. Frederick Shulze, professor emeritus from the music department, continues to maintain the system.
