It used to be a small castle but unlike most of the structures of its kind in Portugal, it's just a remnant now.

Apparently Salir castle was built in late 12th Century by the Moorish invaders, in order to provide a defensive outpost and protect their farmers in the area. Its ramparts are built of "taipa" and the fortress is one of few examples of Moorish this type of fortification in Portugal. It was captured by the Knights of the Order of Santiago after the fall of Tavira and it was here that the noble Paio Peres Correia, awaited the arrival of King Afonso III before going on to seize Faro. Archaeological excavations have confirmed that part of the vilage of Salir is built on the site of the old fortification.

It is now provided with a small museum, created and kept by the City of Loulé. This space was inaugurated in 2007. There, the visitor can see assorted artifacts found on the place and find further information about the remnant.
