The time capsule was placed in celebration of city of Aitkin's 100th anniversary in 1971. It is to be opened after 50 years which will occur in 2021.

Aitkin is the county seat of Aitkin County. The town has a population of around 2000 people. The town is in a farming area of the state. The town start was that of a river and railroad town.
