The following information is taken from a sign in the street opposite the remains of the old post office building. In the photos there are decorative columns in the stone wall. These are the remains of the facard of the old building.
" For eighty five years from 1894 until its demolition in 1979, the Colonial Post Office with its distinctive tower standing proudly above the roadway was located just across from you here on Marine Terrace. Soon after its opening, control of the post office passed to the newly created Commonwealth Postmaster-Generals Department on 1 March 1901. Postage rates between the state's however were not standarised until May 1911 when 1 penny per half ounce became the uniform domestic cost of sending a postal item."
" In 1970 the Postmaster-Generals Department announced that due to the prosperity of the region, within five years Geralton would have a new larger post office to deal with the increased business.
The old post office was vacated and the building was offered to various community groups. No takers however were found and the building was demolished in 1979. The new post office was never built, and the site remained vacant. Many Geraldton residents still lament the demolition.
As part of the Marine Terrace mall project in 1994, the stone from the original post office was used to create a screening wall, and public open space. Later the former post office clock was installed on a tower."
What a tragic end to a beautifull old building.
