At the upper end of the vegetarian food market of the bustling city of Phnom Penh (at least before 21.00) is "Treez". This fine restaurant is located not too far from the Independence Monument (which commemorates Cambodian independence from France). This is the good, perhaps best area of the city, surrounded by several parks, foreign embassies and government offices (thus all good, honest folk).
The restaurant is a pleasant retreat from the outside world. A relaxed, but formal environment with a 'wood' theme. Seating is either outside in a small courtyard, or inside in a minimalist decorated off-white room. A small restaurant, seating for twenty or so people. The menu is similarly brief, but sufficiently replete with options to win over the palate of all but the fussiest gourmet. The food on offer are vegetarian versions of Japanese, Chinese, and Cambodian dishes, plus pasta and a pizza. There are also some interesting drink options. The food here is tasty, and the staff speak reasonable English.
Due to the prestigious nature of this establishment, the price are similar extravagant. The mains come in at $3 or $4, with drinks at $1 or $1.50. An entire meal can set you back $10, or possibly more.
Overall recommended, but—one does not receive free water here, rather one must pay for bottled water. Most restaurant in Phnom Penh place a glass of water before a patron almost before he, or she, is seated. In the climate of the region, this is appreciated. Also, for what ever reason, serviettes were not issued with the meal. I had to ask for each.
