The powder magazine was one the only buildings in this early Michigan frontier fort not constructed of wood.

With soldiers coming from all walks of life, it was likely a stone mason was put in charge of building the fort's powder magazine which Company's A and B, 5th Infantry constructed. To mark that achievement in the fall of 1844 they placed this carved stone above the door.
