In 1858 this church was constructed in the mining town of Cliff as the St. Mary's Church. With the decline of Cliff and the rise of Phoenix as mines closed and new ones opened, in 1899 the church was dismantled, moved to its present site, and reconstructed, being named The Church of the Assumption, with Masses being held until 1957.
Then in 1985 the church building was taken over by the Keweenaw Historical Society. In 2000 it was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Today it is the site of blessings and weddings, with mass being celebrated on occasion.
