Em 26 de Março de 1685 foi lançada a primeira pedra para a edificação desta igreja e convento na rua de Santa Maria; dizendo-se ali a primeira missa, apesar do atraso da obra, a 8 de Abril de 1687.
Antes ainda de concluída a mesma obra, e a 13 de Março do mesmo ano, tomaram aqui o hábito carmelitano algumas donzelas, com o título de recolhidas dos carmelitas, frei Pedro da Purificação e do arcebispo de Braga, D. Luís de Sousa. Foi dedicado este convento a Santa Teresa, ignorando-se até hoje o nome do seu fundador; mas no precioso Manuscrito da Costa se declara, a par de outras minuciosidades correlativas, que Guimarães deve tal fundação ao mercador Francisco Antunes - embora o padre Torcato de Azevedo queira alienar-lhe tal glória - que depois falecera pobremente.
Passados alguns anos - talvez em 1704 - estando o edifício concluído, chegou a Bula do Papa, que autorizava as recolhidas de Santa Teresa a tomarem o véu das religiosas carmelitas calçadas,
trocando então o convento a sua primeira invocação pela nova de S. José. Mas como o lugar de honra, no altar-mor da igreja, era ocupado pela imagem de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, ficou sendo esta a sua invocação mais vulgar e conhecida.

On March 26, 1685 it was launched the first stone for the building of this church and convent in the street of Santa Maria, the first mass was on April 8 1687, despite the delay of work.
Even before completing the work, on March 13 of that year, some women took Carmelite habit here, under the title of the Carmelite gathered by friar Pedro Da Purificação and the Archbishop of Braga, D. Luis de Sousa. This convent was dedicated to Santa Teresa, ignoring up to now the name of its founder, but in the precious manuscript of the Costa is declared, along with other correlative thoroughness that Guimarães owns such foundation to the merchant Francisco Antunes - although Father of Torcato Azevedo want to sell him such glory - who later died poorly.
After a few years - perhaps in 1704 - with the completed building, the Bull of Pope arrived.
