This art deco mosaic mural was designed by Barry Faulkner. It is entitled "Intelligence Awakening Mankind".

"The male and female figures represent mankind. They welcome 'Thought' and 'Science'. The figures, covered by fire and falling into it, represent 'Poverty' and 'Fear,' who are being destroyed by 'Thought' and 'Science.' The male has horns and the female's hair is made up of snakes."
Faulkner (1881-1966) was an American artist known for his murals. During World War I, he was also one of the main artists involved with helping the Armed Services with their camoflage efforts in the Army's American Camouflage Corps. Read more about him at (
