Poirot decides to take a holiday at the seaside, accompanied by Captain Hastings. Poirot’s actual motive for the holiday is to secretly listen to a talk given by Chief Inspector Japp nearby. Whilst on holiday Poirot and Hastings take a trip to the Lake District. On the coach to the Lake District they befriend a young woman taking some valuable miniatures for sale. At their destination the young woman discovers the miniatures have been stolen. Poirot doesn’t want to get involved, so Hastings decides to investigate. He finds that the miniatures have been sold to the man they were intended to be delivered to, before they were stolen. Hastings gets hold of the wrong end of the stick and mistakenly pursues a man eloping with a famous authoress. Eventually Poirot steps in and proves that the robbery was faked in order to sell the miniatures and to retrieve them as stolen.
Captain Hastings has information that whoever sold the miniatures may have arrived at Lake Castle Hotel by ferry. He goes to the ferry to meet the ferry and ask about who arrived and when. The ferry landing is, in fact, the Wray Boathouse. The steam gondola seen in the film is actually housed in the boathouse next to the jetty, although the tenancy from the National Trust appears to be in doubt, given that the Trust want to convert Wray Castle to an hotel.
