Steve Alford was an All-Star basketball player during his high school career in New Castle, Indiana. He then attended Indiana University and was instrumental in helping the Hoosiers win the NCAA tournament in 1987. Presently Alford serves as the head coach of the University of New Mexico men's basketball team. The shoe is one of two giant shoes in the community; the other is located at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
