The memorial looks as though it was erected to commemorate those Fusiliers that gave their lives during the Great War. This was added to after World War II and, as a caveat, a further inscription has added subsequent campaigns.
At the top of the front of the plinth is a bronze shield of the Royal Fusiliers with their motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" a French phrase that means "Shamed be he who thinks evil of it".
Beneath is inscribed:
"The Royal Fusiliers / (City of London Regiment) // To the Glorious Memory / of the / 22000 Royal Fusiliers / who fell in the Great War // 1914 - 1919 // and to the / Royal Fusiliers / who fell in the World War / 1939 - 1945 // and those Fusiliers / killed in subsequent Campaigns".
On the rear of the plinth is a bronze plate that lists the various Battalions and the background of the men.
The plinth is made from stone and stands to a height of about four metres (13 feet). Atop the plinth is a lone soldier with a rifle in his right hand with bayonet fixed. His left hand is clenched by his side. He is wearing the military uniform of the Great War. The statue is about life-size.
The memorial was unveiled by the Lord Mayor of London on 4th November 1922 and was dedicated by the Bishop of London. The sculptor was Albert Toft.
