A church is said to have been founded in this area by St. Tegai (or Cai) in the 5th century. He was a Welsh saint who came over from Brittany to revive the Christian faith in Wales. The the present building, the oldest part of which dates from 1330, being the third St. Tegai's Church. There were major redevelopements in the 16th and 19th centuries.

The mainly slate headstones are inscriped in Welsh, although there are a few English ones too.

Also to be seen in the north side of the churchyard is the reconstructed remains of a 11th century stone coffin, believed to have survived from the second St. Tegai's Church. The coffin is very short? Possibly due to the smaller stature of people from this period?

There are a number of interesting monuments inside the church, such as:

The Alabaster tomb in the church was removed from Llanfaes Priory on Anglesey during the reign of Henry VIII after the Act of Dissolution, as many families was afraid that the effigies of their ancestors would be destroyed. Unfortunately there seems to have been a error and these are not the effigies that should have been returned here!

The memorial to the Most Rev'd John Williams Archbishop of York. He was born 1582 and was buried at the church in 1650. He was the last British churchman to hold a high office of state. After gaining the trust of Charles I he was made Archbishop of York. He held Conwy castle for the king in 1642, during the civil war. After the king's defeat he retired to the nearby Penrhyn Estate.
