Listing the major events 1780-1993. The event of 1784 when ice break up destroyed the structure is marked as the highest event. At this event the Nepomuk statue was teared down into the Neckar.

Even if this bridge is officially named after the elector Carl Theodor, who ordered it in the late 18th century, the citizens of Heidelberg always call it "Old Bridge"! It is made of red sandstone and the idea was to replace the former wooden constructions, which were frequently destroyed because of high waters and ice movements. The first wooden bridge at this place was mentioned in the 13th century, written down in the chronicals. But the Romans probably had a wooden bridge near by this place, too.
