The plaque reads:
"Gift to the City of London / from the President / of the Italian Republic / 16 March 2005 // Magister Equitum / Duillo Cambellotti 1924".

The gift is two identical bronze statues. They show a hooded rider on a horse with his cape and the horse's tail trailing backwards as if riding at speed.

The original was sculpted by Duillo Cambellotti in 1924.

The following extract is from a speech delivered to the Italian President:

"Mr President, Your Royal Highnesses, Your Excellencies, My Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen. May I begin by thanking you, Mr President, and the Italian people for the two magnificent statues of Cambellotti herdsmen on horseback. We pay a great deal of attention to making our streets and parks beautiful and your gift will grace our Thames Walkway, making it even more popular."
