This is a film set in the 1930s depicting a clash of cultures between an old established family, the Whittakers, and an American widow, Larita, who marries the son of the family, John. Larita, a racing driver, is taken to meet the Whittakers. John’s mother, Veronica, takes an instant dislike to Larita, but John’s father, Major Jim takes a liking to her.
Veronica tries her best to make Larita unhappy, whilst trying to keep John on side. Larita soon gets bored with the countryside, but fails to convince John to leave the Whittaker estate. After a number of social gaffes by Larita things come to a head when a newspaper cutting emerges describing Larita’s first marriage to an elderly gentlemen who died of poisoning, assisted by Larita. In a final twist Larita decides to leave her husband and leaves the Whittaker household with Major Jim.
Wimpole Folly is used as the location of an unfortunate tryst by John and Larita. The dogs of the local hunt sniff out the pair, and they are exposed to the whole hunt when Veronica opens the door to the folly.
