This part of London was developed following the Finchley Road Act 1826, which authorised construction of Finchley New Road and Avenue Road, with The 'Swiss Tavern' built at the junction of the new roads.

The Swiss Tavern that was built in 1804 was in the style of a Swiss chalet although there are other accounts. One involves two buildings that stood in front of the pub, a restaurant and / or grill which were built in the Swiss style. It was built on the site of the old toll gate keeper's cottage. It was later renamed 'Swiss Cottage'. Sadly, the name now appears to be 'Ye Olde Swiss Cottage' (yuk). The building was reconstructed in 1965 in it's current form.
