Reuben Hopkins was born June 1, 1747 at Amelia, Duchess County, New York. He joined the New York militia in October, 1775, serving as adjutant and as Secretary of General Committee. With the start of the American Revolution he left his law practice and joined the army as a 1st Lieutenant and rose to Captain serving as the adjutant in Colonel Morris's regiment under Brig. General Clinton. He served at the battle of Bunker Hill, Peaksville and White Plains.
Following the American Revolution he went back to his law practice in Orange County, New York. He again served his country in the War of 1812 commission Brig. General of the Fifth Brigade of New York.
Following the War of 1812 he moved to Edwardsville, Illinois. He was known as the General and each Fourth of July celebration would read the Declaration of Independence at the town's gathering. He died August 16, 1822 and was buried at the Lusk Cemetery. - information from Son's of American Revolution website
