Fourteenth century John of Gaunt, 1st Duke of Lancaster, was one of the most powerful men in the country in his time exerting great influence over the child King Richard II. The Red Lion is often a reference to him.

It is, however, also a heraldic reference to Scotland and James IV (James I of England). Here in the south of the UK it is more likely to be a John of Gaunt reference.

This one is a proper lion rampant.
