The M4 Sherman tank was the main American tank used during World War II in North Africa, Europe and the Pacific. Although the Sherman was inferior to the German Panther or Tiger (but their number alone greatly surpassed the enemy tanks), it was more effective against the Japanese who seldom used anything heavier than light tanks.
The M4 Sherman was a medium tank that carried a crew of five and was mounted with a 75mm main gun, a .50 caliber machine gun, and 2 .30 caliber machine guns. There were seven variations of the 50,000 Sherman tanks made between 1942 and 1944.
A M4A3 Sherman tank is on display in the WWII gallery of the National Museum of the Marine Corps
in Triangle, VA. It is seen preparing to attack a cave with entrenched Japanese troops.
