The pub stands on an old pack horse route between Bingley and Ilkey. The original pub was at a different location but when a new road from Eldwick was constructed the liquor license was transferred to Highgate Farm.

The pub changed its name to The Fleece, and in 1809 was sold to Thomas Hudson. He passed on the pub to his son Richard in 1850.

At this time the area round here was a popular destination for mill workers at bank holidays, wishing to get away from their factories and out on to the moors around Saltaire, Bingley and Ilkley.

The Fleece is about mid way between Saltaire and Ilkley and so was a popular place to stop for a drink and get some food. The pub became known as Dick Hudsons by these regular visitors.

The original building was demolished and replaced with the current building in 1913. From 1823 The pub also became home to an annual walking race from Bradford to the pub.

These days it is still popular with walkers on the moors, but most of its trade comes from visitors in cars and is still popular today for its food.
