Bells obviously have an association with churches. It is Hitchin Lookers' understanding, that the continental norm is for churches to have single bells and the peal or ring of bells is a British tradition. Churches would initially have had a single bell but as funds allowed, additional bells would have been added. This is a reference to a six bell peal. They are clearly not hand bells and there is a church, St Michael's, within a stones throw of the pub.
