As well as simply being an engineer working on projects in the early days of the Industrial Revolution he also developed scientific methods to aid in the design and measurement of engineering related items.
In 1771 the creation of the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers led to the eventual creation of professional engineering institutions.
The Leeds Civic Trust, obviously proud of this Leeds born man, have placed the plaque at lock number 1 on the Aire and Calder Navigation. It was this canalisation of the River Aire that helped Leeds develop and give easier access for trade in bulk transport of things such as coal, wool and even more important barley for use in the nearby Tetley Brewery.
He was born in 1724 and died in 1792.
