Settlement of the Lost River Valley began in the late 1800s and by 1900 there were several ranches and homesteads in the area. In 1901 the White Knob Mining Company began a major expansion of their activity in the area. As part of the expansion they laid out the community in advance of the railroad which was just entering the valley. The community was named for John W. Mackay who was the largest investor in the company. On October 14, 1901 the community was incorporated as the town of Mackay.
