Originally established in 1946 as a hot dog and refreshments spot, the Down the Hatch restaurant has expanded in size and accommodation to the establishment it is today. It is the only dockside restaurant serving Lake Candlewood today, serving boaters and motorists alike. Their primary fare is steak and seafood, but they also serve a variety of other dishes as well, mostly American fare, and, of course, hot dogs, too. There is a full service bar, pool table and video games, occasional live entertainment, and plenty of seating both inside and out. They are open year-round.

There is no refueling station on site, however, there is a full service marina close by.

Originally owned and operated by Art Eberle as 'The Last Resort', it expanded from hot dogs and refreshments onward to include hotel lodging, and then adding a cocktail lounge and full restaurant, it became called 'The Lake Shore Lounge' from the 1950s to the 1970s. In the mid 1970s, Art sold the business to Al Parente, who continued to improve and expand the business to where it is today. In 1980, Al chose a new name for his restaurant, the name it is today: The Down The Hatch Restaurant.

Down the Hatch is not only the only dockside restaurant on Candlewood Lake, it is, between Art and Al, the oldest running food and drink establishment in Brookfield.
