The River Aire was made more navigable in the 1700s with construction of locks, lock cuts an artificially strengthening the river banks. This made the transport of goods much easier during the industrial revolution. This part of the river is known as the Aire & Calder Navigation.

This part of navigation used to have a large number of warehouses alongside it, and docks to load and unload cargoes.With the development of motor transport and motorways, the area became redundant and derelict.

In the late 90’s and early 2000s the area has been redeveloped with offices, apartments, shops, restaurants and the Royal Armouries Museum. The river is now popular with leisure craft, but there is still some commercial traffic along the river. The lock is on the southern part of the navigation and has two sections side by side, one for leisure craft and one for large commercial barges.

The lock is operated mechanically, and there are lock keepers along the river but it can be operated by boat owners. It is the first lock on the navigation, and to the West it reverts back to being just the River Aire. On the far side of the water here there is a weir and the lock has a rise of 4 feet 6 inches to bring it level with the height of the river above the weir.
