When the Civil War ended, hundreds of Confederate graves were left scattered and unattended around the Virginia battlefields of Spotsylvania. In 1866, the Spotsylvania Memorial Association, formed by a group of local women, established a Confederate cemetery on 5 acres of land near the Spotsylvania Court House battlefield. 700+ soldiers were reburied in plots organized by state, including an unknown section for those who were not identified. here.
In the center of the cemetery, a tall granite monument with a Confederate soldier stands watch over the fallen. The monument was dedicated on May 12, 1918.
The cemetery is located on Courthouse Rd. in Spotsylvania Court House. It is opened daily from dawn to dusk.
